Beyond the CPU: What Does RAM Do?

With ongoing advances in technology, smartphones are no longer simple tools for calls and messages. They appear throughout daily life—mealtimes, bedtime, even in brief pauses—and many people habitually check their phones. When choosing a smartphone, buyers pay close attention to appearance and hardware. However, many focus only on the CPU; RAM also has a critical impact on device performance.

Why RAM Matters

Like a computer, a smartphone runs programs in RAM. RAM read/write speed and capacity directly affect how well programs run and therefore overall performance. Alongside the CPU, RAM plays a key role. Generally, larger RAM capacity provides better multitasking and smoother operation. A simple analogy: a cup and a bucket carry different amounts of water. When the cup is full, the bucket still has room; running programs are the water, so more RAM means more headroom. Given a sufficiently capable processor, a phone with larger RAM will run large applications and games more smoothly than one with less RAM.

HTC Dream G1 (192 MB)

Launched as the first smartphone to run Google's Android operating system, the HTC Dream featured a Qualcomm MSM7201 528 MHz processor, 192 MB of RAM, and 256 MB of ROM. While those specs are modest by today's standards, the device marked an important milestone similar to the early iPhone. Since then, mobile memory has grown from megabytes to gigabytes; modern smartphones typically offer at least 2 GB of RAM.

As RAM capacities increased, attention shifted to memory standards such as LPDDR. Prior to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 era, many phones used LPDDR3. Today, an increasing number of manufacturers specify LPDDR4 or newer LPDDR standards for their devices, reflecting improvements in speed and power efficiency.
