With VR's rapid development, virtual reality is becoming more than a concept, and new technologies are emerging. For example, some firms have released mobile VR spatial tracking, and researchers have developed virtual techniques for cross-object replication. Recently, openbci, an open-source brainwave research and applications company, applied brainwave sensing technology to virtual reality. The system can detect changes in attention, alertness, cognitive load, frustration, and different emotional states while a user wears a VR headset and interacts with visual or auditory stimuli.
If this technology matures, it could expand VR experiences. Thought detection could create novel interactions in games or be explored for forensic uses such as lie detection or brain fingerprinting, which raises clear ethical and privacy concerns. Developers integrating brainwave features should treat ethics and personal privacy as primary design constraints.
Compared with external signals such as facial microexpressions, jaw clench, or eye focus, EEG signals are more direct indicators of brain activity. Each person's EEG pattern is effectively unique and can act as an identity marker; when users are active, brainwave patterns can reflect immediate thoughts or states. That capability intensifies privacy implications and reinforces the need for privacy-aware development practices.
Brainwave Sensor Technology in VR
Although technology is advancing, the human brain remains largely mysterious. A paper from the University of Memphis examined whether EEG devices can meaningfully and accurately identify a wearer's mental state, and concluded that integrating EEG with VR could have significant applications in healthcare and education, as well as specific entertainment uses.
Cory Strassburger, co-founder of Kite & Lighting, said, "Our understanding of the brain lags other organs by about 50 years. That veil is only just being lifted, and VR can be very helpful for research and teaching in this area."
Sandeep Gupta from General Electric Global Research noted, "VR can present the brain's structural complexity in a very direct way, and users can interact with the environment. Multidimensional neural imaging data can be revealing. Clinicians can benefit by inspecting injured tissue and assessing surgical impact. One of VR's most direct contributions may be in training neuroscientists."
Conor Russomanno, founder of openbci, has suggested at the neurogaming conference that adding neural sensing to VR headsets could produce a qualitative leap in virtual reality capabilities.
How to Implement
At present, openbci and many neural devices are not compatible with mainstream VR headsets, although some companies, such as MindMaze, are developing dedicated VR hardware. In practical terms, integrating this technology into consumer VR will take time. EEG-based systems presently require relatively long and variable recording times, which reduces reliability.
EEG signals also depend on responses from multiple neuron types, such as place cells, grid cells, and border cells. Real-world navigation relies on integrating multiple sensory inputs, including vision, olfaction, touch, and vestibular cues, which are coordinated. In virtual environments, reproducing the dependencies among these sensory inputs is difficult, and important information may be lost.
For example, in a virtual scenario it is possible to isolate a single sensory input to study its effect on neural responses. In the real world, however, the inputs that are omitted in the virtual experiment would normally modulate the neural response, causing discrepancies between virtual and real experiments. Researchers must address these issues. Validating virtual results against real-world experiments is generally easier than validating real-world findings inside a virtual environment, but ongoing work in neuroscience should improve methods and reliability over time.
