More compact, thinner design
For many users, larger laptop screens help with productivity, so 16-inch ultraportable laptops have become more common. At the same time, 13.3-inch models still have strong demand, especially among frequent business travelers—executives, sales personnel, and product managers—who need a device that fits on airplane or train tray tables. ThinkPad's X series targets that market with compact, lightweight designs.
The X13 2023 Ryzen Edition continues that approach. Compared with previous X13 Ryzen models, the new model reduces overall dimensions from about 305.8 mm × 217.89 mm × 17.9 mm to 301.7 mm × 214.8 mm × 15.95 mm, making the chassis noticeably smaller and thinner. Although weight remains around 1.26 kg, the reduced footprint improves portability in practical use.
The chassis uses a high-strength composite material to keep the laptop light while providing a warm, low-fingerprint surface feel. Compared with metal-bodied designs, the composite finish can feel less cold to the touch in low temperatures.
ThinkPad has a long history in the business laptop market, and the X13 2023 Ryzen Edition has been subjected to durability testing based on MIL-STD-810H standards. The device passed tests including humidity, low temperature, high altitude, dust, mechanical shock, and solar radiation, which supports its reliability for mobile business use.
Backlit keyboard and dual USB4 ports
The review unit includes a 13.3-inch 1920×1200 matte panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which provides more vertical workspace than typical 16:9 panels and is convenient for document editing and spreadsheets. At present, the X13 2023 Ryzen Edition is offered with the 1920×1200 panel; higher-resolution options are not offered.

Measured with Spyder5 Pro, the display covers 100% of sRGB, 80% of Adobe RGB, and 81% of DCI-P3, indicating strong color performance for its class and suitable results for light design work and media consumption.
The webcam uses the ThinkShutter physical privacy switch to close the camera by sliding the shutter. The tested unit did not include an IR camera; models with IR camera are available as an option.
A notable update is that backlit keys are now standard across the range. The keyboard retains classic ThinkPad characteristics: full-size keycaps, X-shaped scissor support, concave keycap profile, 1.5 mm key travel, spill resistance, and the TrackPoint with three-button navigation. These features maintain typing familiarity for existing ThinkPad users and provide a comfortable experience for new users.
Port configuration has been upgraded. The left side includes two full-function USB4 ports, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The right side includes one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port and an HDMI 2.0b port. A SIM slot is available on configurable SKUs. While the total port count is similar to the previous generation, the single USB-C + USB4 arrangement has been upgraded to dual USB4, improving expansion flexibility.
Ryzen PRO 7040 series commercial processors: security, intelligence, performance

These chips share the Ryzen 7040 family architecture, and the initial PRO lineup includes HS and U series SKUs such as Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS, Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS, Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS, and U-series models including Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U. The PRO 7040 series is built on a 4 nm process and Zen 4 architecture. Many of the launched PRO 7040 models include an integrated Ryzen AI engine, bringing dedicated NPU functionality to x86 business laptops.

The X13 2023 Ryzen Edition uses the Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U: 8 cores, 16 threads, base 3.3 GHz, boost up to 5.1 GHz, TDP configurable from 15 W to 30 W. The chip includes 16 MB L3 cache and an integrated 12-core Radeon 780M GPU at 2700 MHz.
As a PRO-class mobile CPU, Ryzen PRO adds features for enterprise security and manageability. The platform supports Microsoft Pluton, AMD memory protection, and architecture-level mitigations to provide layered hardware and system-level security.
The processor also integrates the Ryzen AI engine, a dedicated NPU based on AMD XDNA architecture. It supports common neural network types such as CNN, RNN, and LSTM, and data types including Int8/16/32 and BFloat16. The XDNA AI architecture supports concurrent multi-stream processing, allowing multiple AI inferences to run simultaneously—for example, face detection, depth estimation, and object detection during a video conference.
Ryzen AI NPU performance in the Ryzen 7000 series reaches up to 10 TOPs of AI compute, enabling efficient on-device AI inference at much lower power than running the same workloads on CPU or GPU, which can reduce system power, heat, and fan noise while freeing CPU/GPU resources for other tasks.
AMD has continued to advance mobile AI performance; the later Ryzen 8040 series was announced with up to 16 TOPs of AI performance, representing an approximate 1.6x increase over the prior generation.
Processor performance tests
In Cinebench R23, the X13 2023 Ryzen Edition scored 1734 pts single-thread and 11,580 pts multi-thread. Compared with the previous Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U, this represents roughly a 17% single-thread and 12% multi-thread improvement for the 7840U.
In Blender 3.6 classroom rendering, the system scored 36.83, outperforming the Intel Core i7-1365U (16.74) by a significant margin in this test, indicating strong multi-core compute capability for an ultraportable.

The review unit includes 16 GB LPDDR5x-6400 soldered memory and a 512 GB HBMixier(?) PCIe 4.0 SSD. In AIDA64 memory and cache tests, memory read reached 50,498 MB/s, write 93,222 MB/s, with latency of 127.9 ns.
CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 shows the SSD achieving sequential read up to 7,152 MB/s and sequential write up to 5,049 MB/s, leveraging the PCIe 4.0 lane for high storage throughput.
In PCMark 10, the laptop scored 6,553 overall, with 9,617 in the Essentials category. These results indicate the platform is well suited for typical office productivity workloads.
For creative tasks, the system scored 5,770 in the UL Procyon photo editing benchmark, surpassing many systems equipped with mobile Core i5-13500H processors.
Radeon 780M integrated graphics
The integrated Radeon 780M uses RDNA 3 architecture with 12 compute units at 2700 MHz, and supports features such as real-time ray tracing, AMD FSR, and RSR. The architecture improvements yield notable graphics and AI inference performance for an integrated GPU.

In 3DMark Time Spy, the system's GPU score was 2,541. By comparison, a GTX 1650 Max-Q discrete GPU typically scores around 2,900, so the 780M integrated GPU is within roughly 14% of that level. Intel Iris Xe integrated solutions in ultraportables often score near 1,556 in the same test, giving the 780M about a 63% advantage in this benchmark.
With stronger integrated graphics, the X13 2023 Ryzen Edition can run modern games at playable settings. In 1080p tests, Tomb Raider: Shadow averaged 46 fps on low, F1 22 averaged 67 fps on medium, and Overwatch 2 averaged about 64 fps on high. While gaming is not the primary use case for a business ultraportable, these results show the platform is capable of casual gaming and light AAA titles at reduced settings.
Radeon 780M also provides strong on-device AI inference acceleration. Using a Stable Diffusion setup that supports DirectML inference on the integrated GPU, the test using a 512×512 Stable Diffusion 1.5-like model completed a single image generation in 1 minute 13 seconds. Generating five images in a 5-batch run took 5 minutes 47 seconds total. This demonstrates reasonable performance for AIGC workflows on an integrated GPU in an ultraportable chassis.
Ryzen AI engine enables new intelligent features
The Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U's built-in Ryzen AI engine enables enhanced AI features. AMD has partnered with Microsoft to support Windows Studio Effects, which applies camera and microphone filters and effects such as background blur, eye contact, and automatic framing. These features rely on the NPU for local inference.
On the X13 with Windows Studio Effects enabled, camera applications show background blur, eye contact correction, and auto-framing with minimal additional processor power. In testing, disabling Windows Studio Effects kept package power around 8 W, and enabling the full set of Studio Effects increased package power by roughly 2 W while improving the video call experience.
Because business users frequently attend video meetings in varied environments, on-device AI features that improve camera and audio quality can meaningfully improve meeting presence without significant power cost.

AMD indicates Ryzen AI is supported by many productivity applications, including parts of the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom) and Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, with over 100 AI features reported as compatible. Third-party AI image and video enhancement tools such as Topaz Photo AI and Video AI can also use the NPU for offline local processing, enabling tasks like upscaling, denoising, deblurring, face repair, and frame interpolation without cloud processing.
