Siemens Plant Simulation Data Interfaces

Author : AIVON February 03, 2026

Content

Today we present an overview of data interfaces available for Siemens Plant Simulation.

Introduction

Digital twin technology leverages physical models, sensors, operational history, and other data to integrate multidisciplinary, multiphysical, multiscale, and probabilistic simulation processes. It maps real-world assets and their lifecycles into a virtual space. In recent years, as digital twin applications have expanded in intelligent manufacturing, simulation has become a key part of digital manufacturing solutions. Plant Simulation, as a widely used simulation package, provides a comprehensive set of data interfaces that enable data exchange between virtual factories and physical plants. This article briefly introduces the main interface options. Demo version: Plant Simulation 15.0.

1. ActiveX

ActiveX is an object technology that allows applications to activate objects (ActiveX controls or other COM objects) and exchange data through defined interfaces. Using this interface, Plant Simulation can support features such as video playback, web browsing, and opening documents or images.

2. ODBC / Oracle 11g

ODBC is a database access standard for Windows that allows Plant Simulation to use SQL to read and write data from different types of databases. Through ODBC, Plant Simulation can access database files on various computers and even non-database objects such as Excel sheets and ASCII data files. The ODBC interface can connect to any existing data source.

Oracle 11g provides a connection to external Oracle databases. The Oracle 11g object can connect to any Oracle database server that is accessible from the local network. It supports up to six simultaneous connections to different database servers. Example interface:

3. OPC Classic / OPC UA

OPC Classic is an interface between Plant Simulation and control or automation systems for accessing and exchanging data. As an OPC client, Plant Simulation can read control variables and PLC control signals and provide data to other applications. OPC stands for Open Platform Communications.

OPC UA is a modern interface between Plant Simulation and control and automation systems for accessing and exchanging data. As an OPC UA client, Plant Simulation can perform both read and write operations on control variables and PLC control signals. OPC UA also stands for Open Platform Communications.

4. PLCSIM Advanced / SIMIT

PLCSIM Advanced can emulate virtual PLC functionality (programmable logic controllers), allowing data exchange between a Plant Simulation model and the virtual PLC running in PLCSIM Advanced.

The SIMIT interface provides connectivity between Plant Simulation and process control equipment such as PLCs, enabling simulation and testing of control strategies and process behavior.

5. Other Interfaces

In addition to the interfaces above, Plant Simulation also supports other communication mechanisms such as sockets, XMLInterface, and SQLite, which enable data exchange between simulation models and other applications or factory management systems.
