ELTA Airborne Radar Design and Application Principles

Overview

ELTA airborne radar designs are used for fighter fire-control radars (FCR), airborne ground surveillance radars, and targeting and reconnaissance pods. These systems are built on a common core hardware platform using state-of-the-art technology, enabling multimode and multifunction operation for high performance.

 

Fire-Control Radars

An advanced fire-control radar (FCR) family is designed for multirole fighters, supporting air-to-air, air-to-surface, and naval strike missions with synchronized operational modes and weapon deployment capabilities.

Airborne AESA Fire-Control Radar

The ELTA ELM-2052 is an advanced fire-control radar designed for air superiority and strike missions. Based on fully solid-state active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, it provides long detection range, high mission reliability, and multi-target tracking capability.

 

ELM-2032 Multimode Airborne Fire-Control Radar

The ELM-2032 is an advanced multimode airborne FCR designed for multirole fighters and supporting air-to-air, air-to-surface, and naval missions. The radar comprises three main modules: transmitter, receiver, processor, and antenna. It can be customized and configured to fit various fighter nosecones such as FA-50, F-5, Mirage, MiG-21, and similar platforms.

 

ELM-20600 RTP Reconnaissance and Targeting Pod

The ELM-20600 RTP is an operational reconnaissance and targeting pod that integrates high-performance synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and target designation, ground moving target indication and tracking (GMTI), and maritime modes. The RTP is a complete all-weather, autonomous real-time system that provides high-quality radar imagery of ground targets and terrain from standoff ranges under clouds, rain, fog, battlefield smoke, and similar conditions. The pod supports standard aircraft pod interfaces, including mechanical, discrete, video, and GPS, enabling rapid installation on nearly any aircraft.

 

AESA SAR/GMTI Pod: ELM-2060PES Reconnaissance System

The ELM-2060PES is a high-performance reconnaissance system designed for fighters. Building on the operational heritage of the ELM-2060P, this next-generation system produces higher-resolution SAR imagery over wider areas and greater ranges to support standoff and distant missions. Its advanced radar generates real-time imagery day and night in challenging weather and environmental conditions, including heavy cloud cover, rain, smoke, and fog.

The ELM-2060PES system includes an advanced AESA-based SAR and GMTI radar; a two-way line-of-sight (LOS) data link (ELK-1882 H/T) with an airborne data link terminal (ADT) and a ground data link terminal (GDT); and a ground exploitation station (GES). The system is mounted in a purpose-designed, removable pod with an aerodynamic external shell reflecting approved fuel-tank shapes.

Airborne-generated imagery is transmitted via the built-in two-way LOS data link to fixed or mobile GES units for interpretation and extraction of imagery intelligence (IMINT) and target data.

Operational Modes

  • STRIP SAR - Rapidly covers large areas at long ranges with fine resolution for target detection
  • SPOT SAR - Detailed inspection of specified areas of interest with high resolution for target classification
  • GMTI - Detects and tracks moving targets and overlays them on SAR or other georeferenced imagery

Leveraging operational experience, ELTA multimode airborne maritime surveillance radars use advanced technologies to provide cost-effective force-multiplier solutions for day-and-night, all-weather maritime operations.

ELM-2022 Airborne Maritime Patrol Radar

 

The ELM-2022 family is an X-band multimode airborne maritime surveillance radar series designed for a variety of airborne platforms, including fixed-wing, rotary-wing, manned, and unmanned aircraft. These radars provide cost-effective force-multiplier capability for maritime operations. They operate as true all-weather, day-night sensors able to penetrate clouds, rain, smoke, haze, and camouflage. Modular hardware, flexible interfaces, and antenna designs allow for easy and rapid integration onto different aircraft.

ELM-2022ML Lightweight Airborne Maritime Surveillance Radar

The ELM-2022ML is a lightweight X-band multimode airborne maritime surveillance radar that incorporates advanced features from the ELM-2022 family while reducing weight (50 kg) and power requirements (1 kW). It provides a highly cost-effective force-multiplier solution for maritime operations.

 

ELM-2022ES AESA Airborne Maritime Surveillance Radar

The ELM-2022ES is a modern X-band multimode airborne maritime surveillance radar combining AESA technology with advanced features derived from the ELM-2022 series. It offers high redundancy, graceful degradation, high reliability, and high mission availability, serving as a force multiplier for maritime operations.

 

SAR / GMTI Radars

ELTA SAR/GMTI airborne ground surveillance radars are operational high-performance radar sensors that provide all-weather SAR imaging and GMTI functionality for manned and unmanned platforms.

ELM-2055DX Airborne Ground Surveillance Radar

The ELM-2055DX is an operational high-performance radar sensor that provides all-weather SAR imagery and GMTI capability for manned and unmanned platforms. Used with ELTA's ELS-8994 geospatial exploitation system (GES) or a customer-supplied GES interface, the system offers a highly versatile solution for a wide range of applications.

 

ELM-2054 Lightweight SAR/GMTI Radar System

The ELM-2054 is a lightweight, all-weather SAR/GMTI radar intended for small tactical UAVs (STUAV), tactical VTOL UAVs, ultralight reconnaissance aircraft, tactical airships, and other compact airborne platforms. It uses modern technologies to achieve strong performance while complying with very low SWaP (size, weight, and power) parameters, providing an efficient solution for air-to-ground ISTAR applications.

 

ELI-2058 Tactical ISR Air System Ultra-Light SAR UAS

The ELI-2058 is a tactical ISR system that includes an ultra-light SAR integrated on a UAS, a secure wideband data link, and a mission computer. The system is designed for military, paramilitary, and civil applications and generates high-resolution near-field SAR imagery in all-weather conditions. The mission computer handles planning, monitoring, image processing, analysis, and exploitation. A compact onboard data communications system supports real-time image transmission. The system is optimized for SWaP-C (size, weight, power, and cost).

IMINT SAR Pods

ELTA IMINT SAR pods are field-proven high-performance reconnaissance systems designed for fighters. IMINT SAR pods produce near-photographic-quality imagery and operate as true all-weather, day-night sensors that can penetrate clouds, rain, smoke, haze, and fog.

ELM-2060P SAR / GMTI Reconnaissance System for Fighters

The ELM-2060P is a field-proven high-performance reconnaissance system designed for fighters. The system consists of a removable pod containing SAR with GMTI capability, a two-way data link, and a ground exploitation station (GES). ELM-2060P imagery is near photographic quality and the system operates as a true all-weather, day-night sensor capable of penetrating clouds, rain, smoke, haze, and fog. Airborne-generated imagery is transmitted via the built-in data link to advanced GES units for IMINT extraction and analysis. Data can also be recorded onboard for later retransmission or offline exploitation.

 

Missile Warning Radars

ELTA missile warning radars are radar-based missile approach warning systems (MAWS) suitable for helicopters, transport aircraft, and VIP jets. MAWS can simultaneously detect all types of inbound missiles from multiple sources, such as infrared-guided shoulder-launched missiles, and automatically trigger countermeasure dispensing systems like chaff and flares.

ELM-2160 Flight Guard Missile Approach Warning System

The ELM-2160 is a radar-based MAWS suitable for helicopters, transport aircraft, and VIP jets. It can detect multiple incoming missile threats and automatically activate countermeasure dispensing systems such as chaff and flares. The MAWS has been combat-proven and installed on dozens of aircraft and helicopters.

 

ELM-2161 Detection and Avoidance (DAA) Radar for Remotely Piloted Aircraft

The ELM-2161 is an all-weather air-to-air detect-and-avoid (DAA) radar for remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), such as UAS. The DAA radar detects and tracks cooperative and non-cooperative intruders within its coverage area (+/- 110 degrees azimuth, +/- 15 degrees elevation) and sends detection data to the UAS DAA computer. It provides tracking at sufficient range to enable the UAS to maneuver away from intruders and avoid collisions.

The system includes two compact AESA antennas enabling effective detection and tracking of multiple objects. The antennas and controller meet SWaP requirements and are designed for installation inside aircraft noses. The DAA radar complies with RTCA DO-366A MOPS and safety standards DO-178/254 (DAL-C certification) and is suitable for operation in national airspace (NAS), ICAO international airspace, and military airspace (MAS).
