Common Types of Pressure Gauges

Overview

Vibration-resistant pressure gauges are suitable for environments with severe vibration. They withstand medium pulsation, shocks, and sudden unloading, and provide stable, clear indication. They are widely used in machinery, petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, mining, and power sectors for measuring the pressure of media that are noncorrosive to copper and copper alloys. Pressure gauges are extensively used across industrial processes and research fields, including thermal networks, oil and gas transmission, water and gas supply systems, and vehicle maintenance facilities.

 

Varieties and Common Features

There are many types of pressure gauges. In addition to standard gauges, there are precision gauges; conventional and special-purpose gauges; electrical contact (switch) gauges and remote-transmission gauges; vibration-resistant and shockproof gauges; diaphragm gauges and corrosion-resistant gauges, among others. Despite the variety, the basic operating principle is generally the same. Differences mainly lie in the materials used and specific additional structures.

 

Product Lines and Series

Pressure gauge product lines are comprehensive. They include conventional and standard series, series for ordinary media and for special media, switch-signal series and remote-signal series, etc. These series have been developed to meet practical application needs.

 

Nominal Sizes

Common nominal dial diameters include 60 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, 250 mm, and 300 mm.

 

Mounting and Structural Types

By mounting structure, gauges are available in direct-mount, flush-mount, and protruding-mount types. Flush-mount types are further divided into radial flush and axial flush. Protruding-mount types include radial protruding (also called wall-mount) and axial protruding. Direct-mount types can be radial direct-mount or axial direct-mount. Radial direct-mount is the basic form and is the default when the mounting type is not specified. Axial direct-mount is generally used only for gauges with nominal diameters smaller than 150 mm for stable self-support. Axial flush means an axial front flange; radial flush means a radial front flange; radial protruding means a radial rear flange.

 

Measurement Ranges

In the positive pressure domain, ranges are classified into micro-pressure, low-pressure, medium-pressure, high-pressure, and ultra-high-pressure ranges, each of which may be subdivided into several measurement spans (instrument ranges). In the negative pressure domain (vacuum) there are several vacuum ranges. Gauges that combine positive and negative ranges are called pressure-vacuum gauges; they can measure both positive and negative pressures.

 

Accuracy Grades

Accuracy grades for pressure gauges are clearly defined. Common grades include 4, 2.5, 1.6, 1, 0.4, 0.25, 0.16, and 0.1. The accuracy grade is normally marked on the dial according to specified conventions, for example, "1" indicates grade 1 accuracy. For some low-accuracy gauges, such as those of grade 4 used only to indicate a pressure range (for example, gauges on fire extinguishers), marking the accuracy grade may be unnecessary.

Instrument Letter Codes

Y — pressure; Z — vacuum (when placed after the number denotes axial); B — standard (explosion-proof); J — precision; A — ammonia service; X — signal (electrical contact); P — diaphragm; E — diaphragm capsule; F — corrosion-resistant (stainless steel); XC — magnetic-assisted electrical contact; N — vibration-resistant; T — Bourdon tube.
