Technologies Used in Wearable Devices

What Is Wearable Technology

Wearable technology was proposed in the 1960s by the MIT Media Lab. It embeds multimedia, sensors, wireless communication and related technologies into clothing and accessories, enabling multiple interaction methods such as gesture and eye-movement control.

 

Purpose of Wearable Technology

Wearables aim to enable fast data acquisition through intrinsic connectivity and to maintain social connections through rapid content sharing. They provide seamless network access without relying on traditional handheld devices.

Wearable health devices emerged as a branch of wearable technology focused on health intervention and improvement. Wearable devices began to develop after the 1960s. In the 1970s, inventor Alan Lewis created a wearable computer with a digital camera that could be used to predict casino roulette outcomes.

In 1977, C.C. Colin of the Smith-Kettlewell Institute's Vision Science Laboratory developed a vest for blind people that converted images captured by a head-mounted camera into tactile patterns on the vest, enabling users to "see" through touch. Broadly speaking, this can be considered one of the first wearable health devices.

EVERY Lab considers the health sector to be the priority and most promising area for wearable devices. Wearable health devices focus on intervening in and improving human health. Wearables are evolving from data collection toward direct intervention. Typical applications target common urban health issues, such as providing on-demand neck relaxation massage or directly modulating brainwaves to aid sleep. In this area, foreign company Melon and products from the Chinese market's Every have both proposed innovations.

Comfort and minimal perceptibility are design goals. Achieving complete imperceptibility remains unrealistic for current wearable health devices, but minimizing size and weight is a common objective. Compared with professional medical equipment, wearable health devices may be less accurate, but their advantage lies in convenient, anytime health maintenance and treatment, which benefits prevention and symptom relief.

Wearables should not interfere with daily life. Consumers will not accept devices that require dedicated time or continuous patience. Therefore, design should avoid disrupting normal work and life.

Appearance should suit the use scenario and environment. Wearables cannot always be invisible, but if their appearance matches the environment or is aesthetically appealing, users are more willing to wear them publicly.

 

Ten Principles for Wearable Technology

1. Solve a daily problem

To encourage adoption, a wearable should address a substantive, frequently occurring problem that can be stated clearly in one sentence.

2. Start from people, not devices

Design should begin with human needs and then evaluate technical solutions, rather than starting from a specific technology and seeking an application.

3. Request attention, do not demand it

Because wearables follow the user everywhere, they should respect the current moment and avoid causing distraction. They should allow the wearer to remain focused while providing information when needed.

4. Augment human abilities, do not replace them

Wearables should enhance how users consume and experience information without replacing or interfering with the wearer’s natural experience.

5. Reduce problems rather than add burdens

A wearable solution should solve more problems than it creates in users' lives.

6. Promote depth and breadth of connectivity

Wearable technology should foster broad platform ecosystems that can intercommunicate and integrate with larger systems and services.

7. Be serviceable by software

Supporting both hardware and software enables scalability and flexibility. Hardware can remain stable while software adapts to changing user needs and environments.

8. Minimize hardware, maximize reach

Hardware should minimize footprint while software platforms expand functionality, maximizing the wearable’s impact through a wide application ecosystem.

9. Leverage existing behaviors

Wearables should feel like natural extensions of the user, not require users to adopt unfamiliar behaviors.

10. Enrich favored experiences and take on tedious tasks

Wearables should enhance meaningful experiences and use automation to free users for activities they prefer.

 

Wearable Device Technologies

1. Wireless Transmission Technologies

Wi-Fi is widely used in smart devices and has good prospects. The protocol family has evolved to 802.11ac, with theoretical speeds up to 1 Gbps.

Experts projected significant growth in wearable sales. As hardware advances, wearable designs become slimmer and chips trend toward higher performance with lower power. Mobile smart devices have become hubs for connectivity; thus, connecting wearables to powerful smartphones or tablet computers for processing and cloud sharing is important.

Bluetooth is also a common wireless connectivity technology, supporting short-range communication with typical data rates around 1 Mbps. Its small size makes it easy to integrate into many wearables without stressing appearance or structure. Low cost and efficient transmission helped wearables move from niche to mainstream. Specifically, Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 and later) and Wi-Fi have advantages for wearable applications.

NFC, or near-field communication, is another contactless identification technology. Compared with Bluetooth, NFC is easier to operate and pairs faster. In the era of cloud services, daily data from life and social activities flows through smartphones, and NFC can replace cards such as transit passes, bank cards, and access cards. Many smart wearables integrate NFC for mobile payments and near-range data sharing.

Overall, wireless technologies are essential in today's smart wearables. Multiple wireless technologies will likely coexist long-term, since each has optimal use scenarios.

2. Sensing Technologies

Wearable data often comes from automatic sensing and monitoring rather than direct input. The core of wearables is sensing technology, which collects user activity and environmental data.

For example, early fitness bands used accelerometers for step counting. As more sensors were integrated, functionality expanded. GPS records location and movement tracks. Optical heart-rate sensors use LEDs to illuminate skin and detect blood-flow-related light fluctuations to estimate heart rate. Bioimpedance sensors can monitor blood flow and derive metrics such as heart rate, respiration rate, and skin response index. Galvanic skin response sensors detect sweat and are used in devices that monitor perspiration as an indicator of physiological state.

With sensors, wearables can better understand physiological functions and deeper body-state changes. Collected data can be analyzed by algorithms to produce actionable health insights.

3. Seven Major Interaction Technologies for Wearables

1. Bone Conduction Interaction

Bone conduction transmits sound vibrations through the skull directly to the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear. Although bone conduction sensitivity is lower than air conduction, the cochlear membrane vibrates similarly to air-conducted sound. In normal hearing, sound reaches the inner ear via both air and bone conduction paths.

Bone conduction systems include input devices that capture vibrations from speech via bones and transmit them to a remote or recording device, and output devices that convert audio electrical signals into bone vibrations to convey sound to the inner ear. Bone conduction is common in smart glasses and headsets; for example, Google Glass used bone conduction for audio interaction.

2. Eye-Tracking Interaction

Eye tracking, also called gaze tracking, measures eye movements and gaze direction. It can be performed by tracking features around the eye, iris angle changes, or by projecting infrared beams onto the iris to extract features. Eye tracking has long been used in psychology and neuroscience and is now applied to wearable human-computer interaction, particularly in smart glasses.

The principle is that subtle eye movements produce extractable features. Cameras or scanners capture these features so a system can track eye motion in real time, infer user state and intent, and respond to eye-based control inputs.

Eye tracking typically involves three steps: hardware detection to obtain raw eye-motion data in image or electromagnetic form; data extraction to convert raw data into coordinate-based eye-motion values; and data fusion, which integrates eye-motion values with eye-motion models, user-interface attributes, head-tracking data, and pointing input to achieve gaze tracking.

3. AR/MR Interaction

Augmented reality (AR) overlays informative or entertaining content such as graphics, text, and sound onto the real environment, providing annotations and guidance. Mixed reality (MR) involves computer processing of real-world scenes. AR/MR provides a virtual screen between human and device, enabling scene-based interaction. This interaction style is widely used in smart glasses, immersive devices, and motion-sensing games.

4. Voice Interaction

Voice interaction is one of the most direct and widely used interaction methods for wearables. The maturation of voice recognition and large-scale data processing, combined with cloud integration, has enabled new voice interaction capabilities. The key is integrating voice input with intelligent terminals and cloud backends so that spoken language can be interpreted and linked to search, knowledge computation, content libraries, and question-answer recommendation systems. This integration overcomes the limits of front-end-only voice commands.

Voice interaction development follows two directions: large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition for dictation and desktop applications, and compact portable voice products for tasks like phone dialing and voice-enabled toys. Remaining challenges include robust noise suppression and reliable recognition across varied contexts.

5. Motion-Sensing Interaction

Motion-sensing interaction uses computer vision and related techniques to recognize body language and convert it into commands. It is a new human-computer interaction mode following mouse, keyboard, and touch input, and gains importance with wearables and smart clothing.

Body gestures are instinctive and predate language. Gesture recognition research spans decades, focusing on hand gestures, body postures, and head movements. As wearable textiles and motion-sensing technologies advance, motion-sensing interaction will become an essential interaction modality for wearables. Gesture recognition typically involves continuous capture of hand or tool shape and displacement via sensors, modeling those data into sequential frames, and mapping sequences into commands. With sensor and algorithm maturity, gesture recognition is now practical and commercially viable.

6. Haptic Interaction

Haptic interaction is a newer human-computer interaction technique in the wearable industry and will deeply affect information exchange between humans and machines. Touch is a primary human sensory channel for perceiving texture, temperature, shape, and other attributes, and it supports complex emotional communication. Haptic research explores how to use tactile feedback to enhance interaction with computers and robots, with applications in surgical simulation, entertainment, remote robot control, product and industrial design. Haptics has begun to appear in immersive smart products and will be key to delivering realistic perceptions in virtual environments.

7. Brainwave Interaction

Brainwave interaction, or thought-control technology, has been explored but is not yet widely applied. It could become an ultimate interaction method for wearables, enabling new modes of communication between people and between people and devices. In the future, brainwave interaction may enable highly synchronized human-to-human understanding and create novel human-machine interfaces that represent a culmination of wearable-era interaction methods.
