Mobile Signal Bar Issues and Fixes

April 27, 2026

Overview

What is the role of the mobile signal bar? Is it equivalent to signal strength?

The signal bar is the phone reporting detected signal conditions to the network. The network uses the reported signal information to choose technologies, frequency bands, channels, and other parameters for subsequent communication. People commonly use the signal bar as a proxy for signal strength; for example, when a phone shows two bars, users tend to assume the signal is poor. In reality, the relationship is not always that simple.

This article lists common phenomena to analyze issues related to the signal bar.

Fault Phenomena

Recently, across different locations, different operators, different device vendors, and various iPhone 14 series models, there were cases where the signal bar became faded or the icon disappeared. On one carrier's network, a carrier-branded popup appeared (for example, "Thank you for using China Unicom"); during this period, the device could not perform data or voice services for about 10 seconds.

Fault Analysis

Analyzing user behavior and device state for this scenario shows the device was in a 4G/5G interaction state.

Step User behavior Phone dial *3001#12345#* - Observe UE state
1 Phone set to automatic 5G mode; device attaches to 5G Phone attaches to a 5G cell
2 Perform a brief service activity Phone falls back to a 4G cell
3 Screen off; device may be moved; after 5–10 s screen on Phone returns to a 5G cell
4 Repeat steps 1–3 for about half an hour /
5 After screen on, signal bar becomes faded and icon disappears /

Analysis of UE logs for the corresponding period shows the string "Dump Reason: ** baseband crash detected", indicating the device triggered a modem crash. The root cause was traced to the SDM (power-saving) mechanism: during 4G/5G interaction the mechanism triggered a code protection issue, resulting in a modem-level crash.

Handling

This was an Apple device issue. Apple resolved it in a device software update at the end of 2023. Enabling 5G in device settings can reduce the likelihood of this crash in this scenario.
